Horticultural Therapy Project

Project Manager: Chris White  (361-0206)

Purpose of Project:  To provide an opportunity for the elderly and the physically handicapped who attend programs offered at the Nelson Center to participate in projects involving plants.  These projects might include outdoor gardening, landscaping, indoor gardening, flower arranging, crafts and others.  Focused attention on plants allows for a pleasant concentration  which can take one away from other concerns.  Smell, sight, touch, taste and sometimes sound can be experienced…and because plants are beautiful, responsive to care, and productive, the gardener is left with a “can do” attitude.

Number of Volunteers Needed:  Unlimited

Skills Needed:  Good ideas and innovative approaches to simple tasks; enthusiasm for the project; contacts with others in the community; willingness to commit to one project a month.  We are currently planning a calendar of projects for the year to present to the leadership of the Nelson Center programs for input.

Ongoing Activities:

In January 2006 Master Gardeners helped the seniors make pinecone bird feeders..
