Project Manager: Miriam Corcoran
Purpose of Project: This is a biennial project, designed to teach Tye River Kindergarten students about plants. It was a great success in the Spring of 2005, and is expected to be repeated in 2007.
Number of Volunteers Needed: 6
Skills Needed: A description of the 2005 project is given below:
Eighty-three kindergarten students and four teachers learned about "Seeds, cones, leaves, and plants" through a series of activities which specifically addressed eleven identified Virginia Standards of Learning. Students were involved in reading, writing, drawing, computing and growing activities.
Nelson County Master Gardeners developed the activities and met several times with the students. Some of the activities showed the students how plants grow. They grew grass seed for the hairy paper cup people project. They practiced identifying leaves, cones, trees and flowers and they graphed sizes of different flowers. Another project showed how Beans grow. The final activity was a reading of the Frog and Toad Together story of The Garden.

Each student produced a booklet of information and a PowerPoint presentation about their projects and a CD of all students work was given to the Principal, Mrs. Sandra McKenzie. Kindergarten Students typed their names on computer, had their pictures taken, set up their PowerPoint presentations and recorded sound files for the CD.
Shady’s Place, Chen’s Chinese Food, Fisher Auto Parts, Virginia Computer Institute - The Meeting Place, and The Wintergreen Nature Foundation have supported the project.
