4-H/Junior Master Gardeners
Purpose of Project: Provide horticultural instruction to 4th grade students.
Annual Plant Sale
Purpose of Project: To generate funds for the Association by selling plants from Master Gardener gardens. At the same time, interact with the public and talk about gardening. The Plant Sale traditionally has been held the Sunday before Mothers' Day, at the Ruritan Park on Route 151, 3 miles north of Nellysford, in association with the Rockfish Valley Community Center.
Communications
Purpose of Project: To disseminate gardening information to the public and to members of the Nelson County Master Gardeners Association.
Demonstration Garden
Purpose of Project: To create and maintain a garden in a central county location that will disseminate good horticultural practices through on-site information and classes, including 4-H and Elementary School workshops.
Farmers Market
Purpose of Project: To provide information and answer horticultural questions posed by the people who stop by our booth during market hours.
Habitat for Humanity
Purpose of Project: Nelson County Habitat for Humanity has as its goal to build three houses every two years. Master Gardeners offer their assistance to new homeowners by helping them develop a landscape plan,
Help Desk
Purpose of Project: The Nelson County Master Gardeners (MGs) operate the Help Desk located in the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office (VCE) in Lovingston, Virginia. The Help Desk assists the VCE Nelson County extension agent by answering residential (non-commercial) horticulture questions throughout the gardening season, March through October.
Horticultural Therapy
Purpose of Project: To provide an opportunity for the elderly and the physically handicapped who attend programs offered at the the Rockfish Valley Community Center to participate in projects involving plants. These projects might include outdoor gardening, landscaping, indoor gardening, flower arranging, crafts and others.
Humpback Pioneer Farm
Purpose of Project: This is a joint project with the National Park Service. We aim to teach young people the skills, values and traditions of planting, maintaining, and harvesting a 19th century "survival garden".
Intern Training
Purpose of Project: To train volunteers for the Master Gardener program.
Native Plants
Purpose of Project: To propagate native plants from the area. To educate the community about area native plants and supply plants.
Tree Identification
Purpose of Project: Select and identify representative trees in public spaces throughout the county that can be labeled, increasing public information and appreciation of our local trees.
