Horticultural Therapy

Purpose of Project: To provide an opportunity for the elderly and the physically handicapped who attend programs offered at the the Rockfish Valley Community Center to participate in projects involving plants. These projects might include outdoor gardening, landscaping, indoor gardening, flower arranging, crafts and others.

Focused attention on plants allows for a pleasant concentration which can take one away from other concerns. Smell, sight, touch, taste and sometimes sound can be experienced. And because plants are beautiful, responsive to care, and productive, the gardener is left with a "can do" attitude.

Number of Volunteers Needed: Unlimited.

Skills Needed: Good ideas and innovative approaches to simple tasks; enthusiasm for the project; contacts with others in the community; willingness to commit to one project a month.
